When we look through a thermal or digital device, we tend to think that all the quality depends on the exterior sensor. However, there is an intermediate component that can ruin the experience or take it to another level: the internal screen (the micro-display we look at with our eye).
Why does the type of internal screen matter?
The internal screen is responsible for translating the sensor’s electrical signals into images visible to you. The type of technology used determines black contrast, eye strain and, above all, the equipment’s performance in extreme cold temperatures.
There are currently three dominant technologies in the night vision and thermal imaging market:
1. LCOS screens (Liquid Crystal on Silicon)
This is liquid crystal technology adapted to tiny screens. It is inexpensive to manufacture and offers decent resolutions, but it has a major enemy: extreme cold. If you use a device with an LCOS screen on winter nights below 0°C, you will notice that the screen becomes “slow,” leaving an uncomfortable trail (ghosting effect) when moving the device.
2. OLED screens (Organic Light-Emitting Diode)
A much superior technology. Each pixel emits its own light, which means that to display the color black, the pixel turns off completely. This creates true blacks and spectacular contrast for distinguishing thermal signatures. In addition, its response time is instant and it does not slow down in the cold.
3. AMOLED screens (Active-Matrix OLED)
This is the evolution of OLED, optimized for much more efficient battery consumption and higher brightness. AMOLED screens are the gold standard in premium brands like Nocpix or the higher-end Hikmicro lines. They offer superb sharpness, vivid colors (in color palettes) and work perfectly in extreme temperatures down to -25°C without breaking a sweat.
Technical summary for the buyer:
- Will you be using the equipment in winter or cold climates? Avoid LCOS screens. Go firmly for OLED or AMOLED technologies.
- Looking to reduce eye fatigue during long waits? The contrast of AMOLED screens will allow you to tire your eyes much less thanks to the purity of their dark tones.
