The Importance of NETD

NETD (NOISE EQUIVALENT TEMPERATURE DIFFERENCE, or noise-equivalent temperature difference) is one of the most important parameters that determines the quality of a thermal detector, and in most cases it does not receive enough attention due to lack of awareness. It is true that in recent years brands have been placing a lot of emphasis on improving this quality factor and publishing it. HIKMIKRO (HikVision) or AGM with its NETD 35, or the Pulsar Helion and Pulsar Accolade 2 XP Pro with NETD 25.

This number tells us the ability of the thermal monocular or thermal camera to distinguish very small differences in thermal radiation. The NETD value is expressed in mK at a predetermined temperature.

We notice that difference in NETD in the thermal image mainly in conditions where there is little thermal variation, or where there is fog or rain.

Until the release of thermal monoculars and binoculars with NETD of 25 and 35mK, there was a table in which NETD 40 values were shown as excellent, so the arrival of these new models shows us the new level of observation that these thermal devices are reaching.

The race among brands to have the best thermal observation equipment is becoming dizzying, and they are focused on continuous improvements to satisfy the most demanding observers.
